Dominique Moceanu Biography

I thought it would be fun to do a Gymnast of the Month, based on birth month :) Born in September is the lovely and talented...

Dominique Moceanu!

Bio -

DOB: September 30, 1981
Country Represented: America, but is of Romanian descent
Coaches: Marta and Bela Karolyi
Best Event: This is debatable, but I always loved to watch her on beam. She had a pretty cool mount and her routines were chalk-full of difficult skills (Get it? CHALK-full? Eh? Changed the spelling for a little gymnastic humor there :P Lol)
Best Known For: Her position on the 1996 Women's Olympic team - the Magnificent Seven, who brought home the American team gold.
Currently: Retired from gymnastics, she is married and a mother of two kids, Carmen and Vincent.
Interesting Fact: With the money she earned from her career as a gymnast, she helped build a gym called Moceanu Gymnastics, Incorporated. It opened in 1997.

Thanks to Wikipedia for the information!

  3. Hi Callie :)

There's really no set number of how many chin-ups of leg lifts you need to be able to do in order to learn a kip. Basic upper body strength is essential, but there is no particular required amount of conditioning, so I can only give you an estimate. I guess I would recommend working on your pull ups in sets of 10 or 12 at least, and leg lifts you could maybe work 3 sets of 25. How does that sound? I have no idea how much strength you already have, so it's hard for me to help you over the internet. Do whatever your coaches recommend - they'll let you know when they think you're ready to start practicing your kip. Good luck!

Also, for future reference, would you mind posting your questions in the designated "Questions and Comments" post? The September questions post is a little farther down the page. It's a new thing so I wouldn't expect you to have seen it, but I'm trying to organize everybody's questions for the month in one place. That makes it easier for me to keep track and get to everyone's comments. Thanks!

  4. I have a question. Do I sound like a healthy weight? Or am I over or underweight? I'm 5'3" 110-113 and I'm almost 13, I have a lot of leg muscle and some arm muscle. But I always feel fat compared to my friends, although they arent gymnasts. Am I just all muscle? Is that why some of my friends are lighter then me? Since they're not a gymnast? One of my friends who plays soccer weighs 95 so I feel fat, and then my friend who goes to gymnastics with me (the one who might be anerexoic) she weighs 83ish but is on 2" shorter then me! THANKS!!(:

  5. For questions like that I would refer you to a doctor, since I obviously can't give professional advice. However, I can tell you that I am an inch shorter than you, at least 5 pounds heavier than you, and am considered a very tiny little person. Based on height/weight charts you are WELL within the healthy weight range, which is great. Your friend is underweight.
