  1. i had a mock meet today..my scores were
    9.0 - floor
    9.0 - vault
    9.0 - bars
    9.1 - beam

this would equall like 36.10 right? are these good scores? i was disappointed i didnt get 9.5 or 9.6s ;p is 36.10 AA good for a first time competing? would this score get you a medal ? like first or second??

  2. Those are FANTASTIC scores! 9s at the first meet?!? So cool! You should be really proud of yourself. Yes, it does add up to a 36.10 AA. Don't be disappointed that you didn't get 9.5s - scores like that are rare and the scores you got today will definitely earn you a few medals :)

  7. I thought about doing Cathy Rigby but it's Holly Vise's birthday today! So I thought it would be fair, since I was planning to get the post up sometime today, to do her instead. :) Cathy will be next December! Lol

  8. Hi(: Sooo, do you know anything about club teams? I can't remember if I asked you about club teams or not, but I didn't think I did. I was asking because my coach said that my class, which is basically a 10+ beginner class, could be ready to compete on it in a year. Do you think that would be possible? I reeeeally wanna compete, so I hope it is.(: I started in september, and I already almost have my back handspring and a couple other little things on floor. Plus I practically have a back hip circle on bars, since my coach barely spots me when we do them, but idk what else because we don't have much time during class to try a lot. But as for beam and vault, I don't have much. :/ Would it be do-able to be on the team in a year?

And also, do you have any tips on increasing back flexibility? Because for backbends, back walkovers, and everything like that, I have a lot of trouble with bending my back very far.
    Thanks!

  9. Oh ya! and by the way, do you know of any websites that sell alpha factor leotards? Because I LOVE them, but I don't have a password or whatever to design them, plus I don't really want to; I just wanna buy one. I know leotardworld.com does, but do you know of any others?
    Thanks(:

  10. Hey gymnastics4ever!

Did your coach mention which level he/she thinks you could compete next year? I would guess level 4, but I'm not sure of all you can do. If it helps, here are some of the general requirements you need to compete level 4.

    Floor:
    Round off back handspring
    Handstand forward roll
Back extension to push up position
    Split leaps/jumps

    Beam:
    Split leap
    Half turn
    3/4 handstand
    Straight jump tuck jump series
    Arabesque
    Handstand dismount

    Bars:
    Pullover
    Front hip circle
    Shoot through
    Mill circle
    Back hip circle

    Vault:
Handstand flatback on a Resi mat

As for the back flexibility, just continue to practice your bridges and "proper bridges" (legs straight, chest in line with shoulders). Honestly, I was one of those kids who never had great back flexibility. Bridges help, but there might come a point where you're just going to have to deal with the disadvantage. You'll still be able to do all the skills though, just keep working on those bridges!!

And about the leotards, those are so hard to find! I don't know where else you can get them but I'll keep my eyes open and let you know if I find any.

  11. No, she didn't mention a level. Thats what I don't really get about club teams. My friend is on it, and told me you can pretty much compete at any level, but idk. I know they accept people from kindergarten-high school.
    And ok, thanks.(:

  12. The average club team just refers to the USAG Junior Olympic program, so they recognize levels 4 through 10. Some gyms have their girls start at level 5, some at level 4. So that's why I asked, but I would assume you'd start at level 4. From there you just work your way up!

Certain clubs will accept different ages of kids. USAG says you can't compete level 4 until you're at least 6 years old, and most clubs will allow you to compete until 18 or 19.

  18. helloooo!

i keep undercutting my handspring and by tuck always lands exactly in the same spot i started it. because of that i can't do my layout or twist well. my coach says i keep piking down my back handspring but i don't know how to fix this. PLEASE HELP!!! my tumbling is the only thing stopping me from moving up :'(

  19. tomorrows my FIRST meet ever.....i thought i wouldn't be nervous..but im REALLY nervous. i really want to do REALLY good! but im exciitted! :) wish me luck ! :D and good luck gymnastics, i bet you'll do awesome!! :)

  20. It's going to sound silly since I'm sure you've been doing round off back handsprings for a long time now, but take it back to the basics. Do some beginning drills to help you get a feel for it again. Here's a video with some ideas, plus whatever your coach gives you to do...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecX-D9ckBls

Also work handsprings on a tramp/tumble track and really just focus on lengthening them, stretching it out.

One more thing you can try is working on your snap downs with your hands on a spring board (so hands on the springy edge of the board, kick up into handstand and then snap down onto the floor). The bounciness will help you to work on getting the nice hollow position instead of a pike. Hope that helps! You'll get it. Good luck.

  21. Good luck callie! You'll be great! Meets are so much fun :)

  22. i have a girl in my class who does a really goo vault for level four, but she has alot of power so when she hits the handstand, and has a HIGH block off and its hard for her to control the landing...her feet come first, and she kinda flips onto the mat..any ideas?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Are you her coach or her teammate?

That power is gonna serve her really well when she's vaulting over a table. I'm glad she's developed a good block. Controlling power is just as important as HAVING power, though, so I'd take this opportunity to teach her how to control her body. I may also toggle with the springboard a bit. Pull it out quite a ways and let her fly a little and really work to drive her heels on the first phase. See how that works.

  24. my meet went.....idk. i got 9.3 on vault and bars, then 8.5 on beam ( i touched the beam with my hands on my handstand when i came down which is counted a fall..usually doesnt happen? and i almost fell off on my half turn.) and then on floor..i got an 8.2 because she didnt tell me she was letting me do my round off backhandspring by myself and i went too fast ( if you get deducted for that..) if you dont, then i think i traveled on my leap pass.. :// i got 35.3 AA. i cried for floor and beam!

    ReplyDelete
  25. My goodness! Are you kidding me? Those are fantastic scores, especially for a first meet! You should be so proud of yourself and all your hard work!! It's good to note a few things you can improve on, which you've done with your handstand on beam and your half turn, but make sure you also remember what you did well so you can do it again next time :) What are five specific things you're proud of from this meet?

    ReplyDelete
  26. OMG! the scoring at this meet was so tough!!!!! but i got these scores bars: 8.65 Beam: 8.2 (I expected that) floor: 8.35 vault:9.0!!!(: im happy but on floor i feel like i did better than what i got. and beam i did bad, vault i know this might sound self centered but i felt i did better than that score..and bars was good(:

    ReplyDelete
  27. Great job!! That's awesome :) I think those are fantastic scores! Wooo 9.0!

  32. im wicked excited! at practice yesterday..my coach said i'll compete in feb ( since she didnt think we would have any meets in jan, but shes gotten call backs from meets that we've been accepted i cant compete level five till the next meet in feb. ):) but she said i'd could do level six easily minus my leaps and floor! i hope i can do optionals by this time next year! :D i ALMOST have my backhandspring..she was going to let me do it by myself but i was scared :P not scared to do a robhs but..weird? and i got my back walkover on high beam :)

  35. Do you know if it's possible for me to do my kip in bar routine even though im only a level 4? Thansk!! oh and im working flyaway and long hangkips!!(:

    ReplyDelete
  36. No, unfortunately you can't compete a kip in level 4. But you're gonna be awesome in level 5, I can't wait!! How's the flyaway coming along?

And great job on the back handspring, Callie! :)

  37. do you have any advice for me to get better on beam? and my split leaps? I'm really bad at both of them! please and tthank you!(:

    ReplyDelete
  38. First of all, you are not BAD at anything! You can make improvements, but you're not bad. :) What are you having trouble with on beam? For the split leaps, the best thing you can really do is just have a nice, comfortable split or an oversplit even, so it'll be easy to reach 180 in your leap.

    ReplyDelete
  39. beam its the turns, and twist off. and thanks!! i have over splits on a gymnastics mat!! idk why i am not able to do it!!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I have gymnastics tomorrow..I'm gunna get my twist off!!! I'm not gunna be afraid!!! I'm also going to get my aerial, front pike, and back handspring!!!! I am going to try my hardest to get my long hang kip!!!!!(: wish me luck, and if you have any advice I'd more than appreicaite it!!!

  41. Hiii.(: Well, as I've said before, I want to be able to be on my gym's competitive team in a year or two. I only go to class once a week, because they only have one 10+ beginner class once a week. :/ With that, how long should it take me to get a back handspring? I know it depends, but I was wondering because I want to be able to do silver tumbling, which requires a backhandspring, but I don't want to do bronze tumbling, because thats pretty much just for little kids. :| Any estimates of how long it will take me to be able to do that tumbling class? I really want to get extra practice in there, and idk how else I would.
The other option is my gym's recreational team, which has practice once or twice a week for two hours. That could also give me extra time to practice, but I don't think I have enough skills yet, and idk how long it would take me to get enough. :/
Any advice on which I should try to get into?
    Thanks! (:

  42. Hey, so I worked on my twist off and it got better but I'm still having trouble twisting..any advice?
also my back handspring is a lot better!!!! so is my kickover according to my coach(:

  43. Gymnastics4ever -
How far along are you with your back handspring progress? Can you do the skill on the floor with a spot, or are you starting from the beginning? I can't remember what point you are at with the skill. It's tough with only one practice a week, and I really don't know how to give an estimate. I guess if I have to give you a time frame I might say a few months? But as I said before, it is completely dependent on a thousand different factors.

    gymnasticsluver -
Nice job! You're doing great :) For the twist off (I'm assuming you're referring to the level 5 beam dismount) I would just keep working with a spot. If a coach can get behind you and sort of assist with the twisting motion you might get the feel for it a little quicker. A tip to remember is to make sure your shoulders are "extended," for lack of a better word. Push up tall with your shoulders as much as possible and that will help you to get to vertical and to avoid falling down on the wrong side of the beam.

  44. Thanks so much!!!(: that helps!!! I'm going to get it soon!!!!!!! can't wait for a new post(:

  45. how do i improve my splits and leaps? i have the worst leaps! AND splits. i try SO hard to do splits every night..but its hard to commit to it! i'll do it for two weeks then stop and go back..and !! its frustrating. how do i get better splits, leaps and staddle jumps?? i have ankle weights, but i can't do straddle jumps on the floor, at all..and i NEED a straddle jump for level five! helpp me?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Hi Callie! Good to hear from you :)

I know it's hard to commit to practicing splits every night, but taking a couple of weeks off usually puts you right back to where you started, making all the work you did in the first place kind of useless. If you want to keep stretching every night, which I think would help with your jumps and leaps tremendously, maybe try to write out a schedule including the time you want to stretch, how long you'll stretch for, and what stretches you'll do. Also, put a post-it note someplace that will remind you to stretch so you don't forget! Keep your form in mind as if your coach were there to correct you.

In the gym, does your coach have any bungee-type bands that you could use? We used to put a band around our ankles and do straddle jumps like that. They'd usually roll up our legs a bit when you did the jumps, but it helped us to really force out all our power. Be careful about ankle weights. I love them but if you use them too much or if they're too heavy they can cause injury over time.

The only other thing I can say is just practice and practice some more. You'll get it. :)

  47. hey so I got my twist off twice today...so I'm getting better...I got a HUGE rip!!!! I did routines on everything and floor I had my split leap REALLY BIG! and I had tight legs and pointed toes(: bars I got a HUGE cast and kept tight(: beam...well beam is beamm..:/ haha! and also for the poll i like ALL the ideas(:
